The Ayurvedic Approach to Scalp Health & Stronger Roots

Ayurveda treats hair as a byproduct of scalp health, not a surface to be fixed. Thin, brittle or shedding hair is read as a signal from the skin it grows out of — dryness, congestion, or heat at the root. So the traditional routine spends most of its effort on the scalp, and almost none on the strands.

The core of that routine is oiling. Warm a small quantity of coconut, sesame or a bhringraj-infused blend, part your hair in sections, and work it into the scalp with your fingertips for five minutes. The massage matters as much as the oil — it loosens tight scalp skin and brings blood to the follicles. Leave it in for an hour, or overnight if your hair is very dry, then wash it out.

Washing is where most modern routines go wrong. Sulphate detergents strip the scalp's natural oil so completely that it overproduces to compensate, which is why hair feels greasy again by day two. A herbal wash built on reetha (soapnut), shikakai and amla cleans much more gently. It won't give you a thick lather, and that's the point — lather is a detergent effect, not a cleaning measure. Expect a two to three week adjustment period while your scalp recalibrates.

Amla deserves its reputation here. It's exceptionally rich in vitamin C, has been used for centuries in hair rinses and oils, and works on shine and root strength together. Shikakai conditions as it cleans, so most people can skip conditioner entirely. Fenugreek and hibiscus are useful additions if flaking or dullness is your main complaint.

Consistency beats intensity. Oil once or twice a week, wash twice a week, and keep heat and tight ties to a minimum. Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month, so any genuine change in texture or density takes three months to become visible — anything promising faster is selling you something. Give an Ayurvedic routine one full season before judging it, and you'll usually see calmer scalp skin first, then stronger roots.
